Back story: Her family consisted only of her mother and father, as her other relatives disinherited them because they were worshippers of Fire dragons. They adored everything that the Fire dragons did or believed the Fire dragons did, bent beneath the power they saw in the dragons, and didn't care that the Fire dragons wanted to kill them; Saran's family were blinded with the power of the dragons and faith that humans were evil. In turn, they were viewed as insane because nobody really believed in dragons, in mythical creatures. Saran could not deny the fact that humans had evil in them; as wealthy tradespeople, they were tolerated by the nobles and by the commoners both, but didn't fit in either circle. When her house burned down because a lamp fell during a prayer to the Fire dragons, she ran even as her parents were still praying, apparently not noticing the heat. Away from her small village in the hills and parents who still prayed even when burning alive, and made her way, slowly, to the Ice  land. It took her half a year, having to work and pay her way there gradually. Being used to people talking behind her back, she made her way into the army through skill. It was during this time she had a lot to thank her parents for; she was taught to use her staff and various other weapons like the bow, sword, and dagger, by her parents since she was old enough to walk. Believing in the evil nature of humans, her parents were paranoid people who learned self-defense from whomever they could. And of course, traveling across a land when directionless leads to meeting a lot of people, good and bad. The good taught her how to use her body as a weapon; the bad were practice dummies. And there were a lot of bad.
Saran despises her memories for they remind her of the time when she could not help anyone, and could barely help herself. She remembers the faces of the slaves she met every day, and her own inability to help them, because she avoided towns and cities until she required supplies. Her plan was solely to get in and out quickly, but scenes like a master beating an already bloody slave was commonplace in the Fire kingdom, and to stand up for a slave was to become one. Her weakness of being unable to stand up for others was something she came to fix over the years she spent in training to become a soldier.
