Golden eyes met his own warm brown ones, leaving him feeling a sense of deja vu and a pain in his abdomen as though he'd been stabbed years ago. Rubbing his stomach, he suddenly realized he still held the elbow of a girl who was now staring at him with an oddly familiar tilt to her head. Releasing it, he dropped his arms to his sides and they stood there, staring, looking. He scrambled for something to say.
"I-" WHOOSH. A truck rumbling by nearly caused the girl's hat to fly off, and she turned to watch the truck continue on its way. He looked down upon her profile with a warmth spreading through his chest. Still mentally scrambling, he was unprepared for the golden eyes to meet his once more. Finally, the faint, brief strumming of a guitar from a passing car reminded him.
"That song you were humming, what's it called?" He nearly had to shout to be heard over the passing cars. Tilting her head, she seemed to wear an expression of incomprehension without changing her facial features at all. Having hit upon a topic of conversation, he looked around for a quieter place in which to converse. Spotting a familiar street corner, he motioned towards Cafe Tornado along with a questioning glance.
"Do you want to get lunch with me at Cafe Tornado?" He asked rather loudly, just as a piece of quiet had made its way to them. A few questioning glances made him blush and stammer. He began to fluster, gesturing wildly. "I mean, it's a public space, you don't have to worry. That is to say, I'm not a stranger. Well, no, I am one but- Well, would you like to get some Mapo Tofu with me?"
She began to walk past him. He hung his head down with a sigh. Only to be softly tapped on the shoulder by a white fingertip. He turned to see her face lifted up towards him.
Pointing to the street corner, she said, "Isn't Cafe Tornado this way?"
With a smile and sense of having gained a second chance, he nodded. As they crossed the street, he realized something.
"Oh, that's right, we haven't been introduced yet. My name is Otonashi. Otonashi Yuzuru."
Accompanied by a slight nod, she softly answered, "Tachibana Kanade."
"That's a pretty name."

Don't Forget
I’m not even as half as strong
as I wish to be.
I’m not even a quarter of how clever
I’d like to be.
I’m not, I’m not, I’m not
oh so many things.
But I’m a million times better
then I was at the start,
a hundred times better
than I was ten years ago
and a fraction better than I was yesterday.
The things that defines me,
are what I’ve been creating all my life.
It’s the result of the mistakes and flaws
I’ve collected on my road
and the hope and courage
I’ve created for myself.
I’m not even a fraction
of what I wish to be
but it’s alright, I know it is.

Never Be You
I wandered down your old street today. I was taking a detour, never meant to stumble that way. But there I was, on the street where I met you, by the house you used to occupy. I could almost hear the sounds of your son and I racing through the puddles in the pouring rain. Just to the next light pole... His laughter echoed like a ghost through my soul. Shadows of memories that still walk with me. Your daughter's smile flashed before me, and a pain like lightning thundered through my heart. My hands still remember the signs I learned for her. I can still see her little fingers, telling me I'm beautiful when I smile. M-smile. That was her sign f

A day never traveled by
Time used to be linear for us
Where Friday to Monday happened in a blink
Yet people twist their times and split away
Now I'm moving to Monday while they're on Friday
I was able to see them after the weekend
Say "Good morning" and "Goodbye"
Before they stepped into another existence
That I cannot venture, no matter my persistence
When I close my eyes
After many days and one final night
Will I be able to catch up?
Is waiting enough?

The start of a fanfiction for Angel Beats that has frankly been in the back of my mind for years, ever since I finished watching it the first time. It'll take place after the final episode, an AU epilogue. Let's hope I continue it, yeah?
